National Geographic has long been a source of inspiration for me. This drawing is from a picture of Alfred Russel Wallace’s collected birds. Wallace was Darwin’s contemporary who noticed evolution around the same time, spurring Darwin to publish The Origin of Species. I did a painting a long time ago inspired by a NG photo of Darwin’s finches, and I had been thinking about doing a companion piece when this issue of NG landed in my mailbox. It seemed like the perfect inspiration. So, what stared as a sketch of Wallace’s birds to understand their anatomay a little bit became this more finished drawing:
